Let's break music tradition!

Paul Davies and his electric Spur violin.

Paul Davies and his electric Spur violin.

Luthier Paul Davies and violinist Sarah Curro (Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and solo artist) were directly responsibly for the direction my music took over the last five years. And I can’t thank them enough. Because of them I created my album Atmosphere. (Read more about Atmosphere in my two previous posts.)

Paul’s new electric violin and his brand of inventive violins are so beautiful. Sonically and visually. Instruments like this and an instrument maker with a real vision for the future are so inspiring.

And then Sarah with her tremendous love for music and infective energy encouraged me to push the boundaries of my own music.

It’s very interesting to talk to them about their backgrounds and their philosophies about the modern music world. How do we transcend the borders of classical music and modern music, be it electronic, folk or rock. It’s all connected.

So I made a radio documentary. We discussed the confinements of tradition and how they can be broken. There’s also lots of music included that Sarah commissioned for her to play. Listen here at Radio New Zealand.
